My scholarship operates at the juncture between mental health and education in low-income schools. I focus on understanding and enhancing classroom and school environments as a means toward academic and social-emotional development among students living in poverty. I have studied school transitions as times of opportunity and risk, and peers and teachers as critical resources for student development. With the support of federal and foundation grants, I conduct collaborative and rigorous research to study and support schools in implementing practices that increase the likelihood that more students – across the diversity of academic, behavioral, and emotional strength and need – will succeed.
